“Certified Pilates Teacher” Definition

The Pilates Method Alliance (PMA ®) was founded in 2001 as the professional association and certifying agency for Pilates teachers.

The PMA-Certified Pilates Teacher creates and implements safe and effective individualized programs for apparently healthy clients to improve health and fitness through exercise and physical activity. The goal of a PMA Certified Pilates Teacher is to impart the knowledge skill and confidence for clients to exercise for a lifetime. By awarding the title of Certified Pilates Teacher, PMA is formally recognizing the Pilates teacher who has provided evidence that he or she meets accepted professional standards.

The PMA ® provides an international organization to connect teachers, teacher trainers, studios, and facilities dedicated to preserving and enhancing the legacy of Joseph H. Pilates and his exercise method by establishing standards, encouraging unity and promoting professionalism.

The aim of industry unification led the PMA ®  to develop a third party professional credential (or “certification”), which was launched in 2005. This credential was created through consultation with a wide range of Pilates experts across the field, under the direction of professional psychometricians, and it serves the Pilates community and the public by validating that a Pilates teacher meets entry level standards for safety and competency. By establishing this professional credential, the PMA® put into place one of the primary components required for any established profession.

Dr Leitner was certified by the PMA as a Pilates Instructor in 2006, in the second round of certifications.  She felt this was important as a way to demonstrate her knowledge and expertise in the Pilates method of exercise in conjunction with her being a licensed physical therapist and certified orthopedic clinical specialist.
